Ethos

The ‘Grand Tour’ was once a rite of passage—a high-stakes journey designed to challenge the character and broaden the spirit. It was always about the transformation of the traveler through the rhythm of the road; whether crossing the American Divide, traversing the Amazon, or journeying across the Old World.

At The Lead Car, we revive the spirit of the Gran Turismo and the ancient thirst for adventure, rooted in the belief that a high-performance machine is the ultimate vessel for human reflection. We don’t just drive to arrive; we drive to see the world, and ourselves, with greater clarity. These journeys are a sanctuary for contemplation and a tool for discovery.

Our Journalistic Mission The Lead Car is an independent automotive archive and journal dedicated to the art of the long-form dispatch. We focus on the modern classic—specifically the Jaguar—as the primary lens through which we document the cross-continental journey. Through cinematic storytelling and mechanical analysis, we archive the intersection of engineering and the open road.

What We Explore

Narrative Journalism on the Road

Reflections on the road. We move beyond the spec sheet to document the psychological landscape of the long-haul driver. Our dispatches provide an honest account of life behind the wheel from the stories found at diners to the shifting perspectives that only 400 miles a day can provide.

The Legacy of Jaguar as a Gran Turismo classic

Our focus is the ‘Modern Classic.’ We analyze the design language and performance of cars like our 2002 Jaguar X308, navigating the mechanics testing the rigors of modern adventure to see how they truly measure up in our pursuit of the adventures that brings us greater clarity of the world. Our first adventure was a 4,100-mile winter campaign across North America from the South to the evergreen Pacific Northwest pushing the limits of the machine and the mind.

The Living Landscape

Cinematic Documentaries and journals of the study of the world around us. From the hard light of a desert morning to the moody shadows of an ancient forest, we capture the beauty of the world as it’s meant to be seen: through the windshield, in motion, with nothing but clear air ahead. We share this with the world visually and in writing.

Expedition Companion

Witnessed by Milo (the world’s most composed Chihuahua-terrier), reminding us that every Grand Tour is also defined by the quality of the companion who joins us.
